The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has secured an emergency loan of £750,000 from its current chair, Rupert Soames, as it continues to grapple with a severe financial crisis following a series of scandals. The lobby group has been working to rehabilitate its image after allegations of sexual misconduct, rape, and drug-taking rocked the organisation last year.
This financial lifeline comes as the CBI faces the termination of its existing emergency financing on September 30, 2024. Soames, who is also the chair of the medical technology group Smith & Nephew, has stepped in to provide the loan, underscoring the precarious financial position of the business group.
The scandals led to dozens of high-profile members, including John Lewis, Tesco, Aviva, and Jaguar Land Rover, suspending or terminating their memberships. The exodus of members plunged the CBI into financial distress, forcing it to cut a third of its 300 staff and close overseas offices. Despite these challenges, Soames has expressed optimism about the CBI's role, stating that "life without the CBI has left something missing" and highlighting its instrumental role in securing business tax breaks and influencing government policy.
In addition to the financial strain, the CBI recently settled a wrongful dismissal case brought by its former director general, Tony Danker, who was sacked in 2023. While Danker's case was clarified as unconnected to the most serious allegations, the settlement adds to the organisation's costs. The City of London Police confirmed one remaining matter under investigation following the allegations.
