A businessman named Hitler Mussolini Simeon Flores has been elected mayor of Queropalca, a remote district in the Peruvian Andes. The 45-year-old candidate from the center-left Ahora Nación party secured 229 votes in the October 4 elections, narrowly defeating his closest rival, Gaspar Osorio, by 25 votes. Flores, who works in freight transportation, will take office on January 1.
While his name has drawn international attention due to its association with notorious European dictators, it is not uncommon for Peruvians to have names linked to historical figures. In 2021, Hitler Saavedra Casternoque was elected to parliament, and in 2018, Hitler Alba Sanchez was voted mayor of another Andean district. Flores previously belonged to Popular Force, the party of Peru’s rightwing president, Keiko Fujimori.
Local media reports indicate that Flores focused his campaign on municipal governance, agricultural development, and regional infrastructure improvements, with Queropálca having a population of just over 700 residents.
