Apollo disclosed the breach in a letter filed with California's attorney general. The company manages approximately $938 billion in assets and has around 5,000 employees. A spokesperson for Apollo did not immediately provide comment on whether a ransom was paid.
This breach follows warnings from security researchers at Google about a new hacking campaign targeting financial and private equity giants. Hackers, known by various aliases, employ social engineering tactics, such as impersonating IT support, to trick employees into revealing login credentials and multi-factor authentication codes. These attacks have reportedly netted ransoms as high as $750,000.
