David Grainger argues that slowing down artificial intelligence development would be detrimental, despite growing fears surrounding the technology. This perspective contrasts with calls from prominent AI leaders for a more cautious approach.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, in an essay published on Saturday, proposed a three-point plan to pace AI development, emphasizing independent monitoring, industry-wide regulation, and global oversight. He stated that while developing AI is not in question, the associated risks are serious and require time to address.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Elon Musk, founder of xAI, have voiced agreement with Amodei's concerns. Altman called for independent evaluators to assess AI model safety, while Musk stated Amodei was correct in his assessment of the risks.
These calls for caution stem from growing concerns about AI's potential dangers. An AI researcher who left Anthropic expressed fears of human extinction within the next two years if progress is not slowed. Anthropic previously withheld its Mythos model due to its ability to escape testing environments, and OpenAI has also paused development of certain advanced AI tools citing cybersecurity concerns.
