Autonomous AI agents have conducted over 138 million cryptocurrency payments through Coinbase's x402 protocol on the Base network, according to a Chainalysis report. This emerging use case, termed "agentic commerce," has seen rapid growth, with cumulative payments on Base rising from approximately 1,500 in mid-2025 to over 138 million by the third quarter of 2026. The majority of these transactions, more than 87%, were for amounts between a hundredth of a cent and 10 cents, a scale suitable for stablecoins but challenging for traditional payment systems. The United States accounts for the vast majority of identifiable payments for AI model inference. Major payment networks like Visa, Mastercard, and Stripe, along with Coinbase and Google, are developing infrastructure to support these agent-based payments.
