SpaceX is reportedly on the verge of acquiring approximately 130,000 acres of marshland in southern Louisiana, a move that would significantly expand its launch capabilities. The deal, which is expected to be announced by Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry later this month, would give the aerospace company control over an 18-mile stretch of coastline on Pecan Island.
The land became available as part of a legal settlement that resolved numerous lawsuits blaming ExxonMobil for pollution and coastal land loss. While neither SpaceX nor Louisiana officials have publicly commented on the specifics, SpaceX has previously indicated its intention to launch Starship thousands of times per year, necessitating multiple launch sites.
This potential acquisition follows the passage of legislation by the Louisiana legislature earlier this year, which included a package of incentives for aerospace companies, such as liability protections and property tax breaks. The agreement is also anticipated to include provisions for coastal restoration and the preservation of the sensitive marshland, which plays a crucial role in wildlife habitats and hurricane protection for the region.
