Mortgage startup Copperlane has raised $4.1 million in seed funding to develop Penny, an AI-powered loan officer designed to streamline inefficiencies in the mortgage origination process. Founded by Athan Zhang and Brianna Lin, both 21, the company aims to offer a full-fledged AI "employee" rather than a supplementary tool.
Peni is envisioned as an autonomous AI loan officer capable of handling borrower intake, answering questions via phone, SMS, or iMessage, and providing loan officers with crucial context and borrower background information. The AI can also offer suggestions for program eligibility and assist with document verification, aiming to free up human loan officers to manage more customers.
The founders, whose parents have extensive experience in the mortgage industry, developed the idea through their entrepreneurial pursuits and participation in the Y Combinator accelerator. They identified inefficiencies in the mortgage origination process by speaking with industry professionals and observing loan officers firsthand.
Copperlane differentiates Penny from existing AI solutions in the market by focusing on a comprehensive, autonomous approach and anticipating future regulatory landscapes. With backgrounds in AI and computer science, Zhang and Lin aim to build Penny in a safe and compliant manner, positioning the startup to navigate the evolving regulatory environment of AI in finance.
