Japan's real wages experienced a 1.6% increase in June compared to the previous year, marking the sixth consecutive month of growth. This sustained rise in real pay provides support for the Bank of Japan's consideration of further interest rate hikes. Average nominal wages, representing total cash earnings, rose by 3.4% to 531,677 yen per month, exceeding the revised 3.3% gain seen in May. The growth in real pay matched May's revised 1.6% increase. Workers' base salaries, or regular pay, increased by 3.4%, accelerating from a 3.0% rise in May. Overtime pay growth remained steady at 2.8%. Special payments, primarily one-time bonuses, saw a 3.5% increase in June. The Japanese government projects nominal wages to rise 3.1% annually through fiscal 2027 and real wages to continue growing despite persistent inflation. The Bank of Japan kept interest rates unchanged in its July policy meeting, with Governor Kazuo Ueda indicating upside risks to prices, suggesting a potential rate hike as early as September.
