Citigroup and JPMorgan Chase Bank are set to participate in co-financing two natural gas-fired power plant projects in the United States, totaling approximately $4.61 billion. This marks a significant development as it is the first time private U.S. financial institutions have joined Japan's U.S.-bound investment and lending program.
The initiative, announced by the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), is part of a broader framework where Japan has committed up to $550 billion in investment and lending to the U.S. The funds are allocated to support energy infrastructure and address trade imbalances between the two nations.
The two projects include a development in Pennsylvania, receiving $2.397 billion, and another in Texas, allocated $2.213 billion. The Pennsylvania project is specifically noted for its role in supplying electricity to data centers, thereby supporting the growth of AI and advanced industries.
JBIC is taking the lead in the financing, with Citigroup and JPMorgan Chase joining as private lenders. To mitigate risk for these U.S. banks, Nippon Export and Investment Insurance (NEXI) will provide coverage. This structure aims to overcome challenges related to securing sufficient dollar funding for such large-scale, dollar-denominated projects.
This collaboration is viewed as a new model for international financial cooperation, leveraging government policy frameworks and insurance to mobilize private capital for critical infrastructure.
