UN peacekeepers in southern Lebanon recorded no missile launches or air strikes for a 16-hour period on Tuesday, according to Farhan Haq, the deputy spokesperson for the UN secretary-general. The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) did observe two missile trajectories overnight that were launched from south of the Blue Line and landed north of the Litani River.
Despite the relative calm, Haq stated that UNIFIL continued to document Israeli military activity, including repeated airspace violations, primarily by drones. Peacekeepers also observed Israeli armoured vehicle movements, engineering work, and logistical activity on the ground, as well as four Israeli patrol boats operating in Lebanese territorial waters southwest of Naqoura.
Previously, UNIFIL had called on the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) to refrain from further strikes and fully withdraw from Lebanese territory after Israeli strikes endangered peacekeepers and civilians. The mission's 'blue helmets' are mandated to assist parties in implementing Security Council resolution 1701, which ended hostilities between Israeli forces and Hezbollah in 2006. UNIFIL and the Lebanese Army are working to restore stability to the south along the 120km 'Blue Line' between south Lebanon and northern Israel.
In one instance, peacekeepers detected 52 Israeli airspace violations and 217 projectile trajectories, with 188 attributed to the IDF and 29 to Lebanese non-State actors. On another occasion, from midnight to 4pm, UNIFIL recorded 748 trajectories, 49 airspace violations, and 51 airstrikes by Israeli forces, alongside continued ground activity.
