Widespread power outages have affected approximately half of Crimea following a large-scale Ukrainian drone strike on key energy infrastructure facilities on June 23. Occupation authority spokesperson Oleg Kryuchkov reported the extensive blackouts, which have exacerbated existing fuel shortages on the peninsula.
The attacks, claimed by Unmanned Systems Forces Commander Robert "Madyar" Brovdi, targeted fuel reservoirs at the Kerch Thermal Power Plant, the Simferopol gas distribution station, and the West Crimea 330/110 kV electrical substation. Local energy operator Kremenergo confirmed disruptions in settlements including Yevpatoriia, Saky, Dzhankoi, and Krasnoperekopsk, attributing them to "technical faults."
Monitoring channels reported a significant fire at the Kerch Thermal Power Plant, with smoke visible for miles. Before Russia's 2014 annexation, Crimea relied on mainland Ukraine for over 80% of its electricity. Russia has since modernized power plants, but these remain vulnerable. Ukraine's Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov stated that Kyiv aims to isolate Crimea by striking Russian supply chains, turning the peninsula into an "island."
