Ukraine reportedly struck several electricity substations in Crimea overnight on July 5, 2026, causing a widespread blackout across the Russian-occupied peninsula. Social media channels reported that the Bakhchysarai and Zymyne substations were targeted in the overnight attack.
A pro-Ukrainian channel, Crimean Wind, reported a blackout throughout Crimea as a result of strikes on energy infrastructure. Ukraine has been conducting strikes on military infrastructure deep within Russian territory and occupied areas to degrade Russia's war-fighting capabilities.
Earlier in the week, on July 3, Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) announced it had struck two Russian military air bases in occupied Crimea, damaging or destroying at least seven military aircraft. The SBU stated that the strike on the Saky air base hit seven hangars storing Su-30SM, Su-30, and Su-24 fighter and bomber aircraft.
Additionally, during a 48-hour operation on July 1-2, Ukraine's Unmanned Systems Forces struck 12 power substations and one gas distribution station in Russian-occupied territories, according to USF Commander Robert "Madyar" Brovdi. Kyiv views energy sites as legitimate military targets that enable Russia's ongoing war against Ukraine.
