The General Staff of Ukraine's Armed Forces reported on August 4 that Russia has sustained approximately 1,451,750 troops since the full-scale invasion commenced on February 24, 2022. This figure includes 1,240 Russian casualties recorded in the preceding 24-hour period.
In addition to personnel losses, the report detailed significant equipment attrition for Russian forces, including 12,237 tanks, 25,079 armored combat vehicles, 129,817 vehicles and fuel tanks, 47,331 artillery systems, 2,000 multiple launch rocket systems, 1,538 air defense systems, 439 aircraft, 354 helicopters, 442,740 unmanned aerial vehicles, 2,124 unmanned ground systems, 34 ships and boats, and two submarines.
Ukraine's General Staff has withheld its own casualty figures, citing operational secrecy. However, independent Western think-tank analyses suggest Russian losses are substantially higher than Ukraine's. The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) estimated the casualty ratio to be "roughly 2.5:1 or 2:1." A January 2026 CSIS report projected that Ukraine likely experienced between 500,000 and 600,000 casualties from February 2022 to December 2025, with an estimated 100,000 to 140,000 killed in action.
While official disclosures from Ukraine are rare, President Volodymyr Zelensky stated in February 2026 that at least 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed in action since the war began, with a considerable number also missing in action. The ongoing intensity of drone warfare and combat operations makes retrieving bodies for DNA confirmation challenging for Ukraine.
