The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported on July 8 that Russia has sustained approximately 1,413,510 troops in Ukraine since the full-scale invasion commenced on February 24, 2022. This figure includes 1,260 casualties reported for Russian forces over the preceding day.
In addition to personnel losses, the report detailed significant equipment attrition for Russia, including 12,100 tanks, 24,903 armored combat vehicles, 117,574 vehicles and fuel tanks, 45,569 artillery systems, 1,918 multiple launch rocket systems, and 1,478 air defense systems. Russia has also lost 436 aircraft, 353 helicopters, 396,920 drones, 33 ships and boats, and two submarines.
Ukraine's General Staff has not disclosed its own losses, citing operational secrecy. However, independent Western think-tank reports, such as one from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in January 2026, suggest that Russian casualties significantly exceed Ukraine's. CSIS estimates the ratio to be "roughly 2.5:1 or 2:1," with Ukraine likely suffering between 500,000 and 600,000 casualties from February 2022 to December 2025, including an estimated 100,000 to 140,000 killed in action.
