Islamic State-linked fighters kill 16 civilians in eastern Congo

Fighters linked to the Islamic State group have killed 16 civilians in an attack in eastern Congo, specifically in the village of Mbau in North Kivu's Beni territory. The attack, which occurred on Tuesday night, was carried out by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a Ugandan group that has been operating in eastern Congo and pledged allegiance to Islamic State a decade ago. This incident highlights the persistent threat of armed conflict in the region, occurring near an area where health officials are attempting to contain an Ebola outbreak. There are currently four Ebola cases recorded near the site of the recent attack, with two cases in the city of Beni and two in the town of Oicha. In a separate incident over the weekend, ADF fighters were responsible for killing 15 civilians and one soldier in the city of Beni. The World Health Organization has reported that the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has resulted in 344 confirmed cases and 60 deaths, with cases also confirmed in neighboring Uganda.
