SEOUL, July 15 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's top military officer, Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) Chairman Gen. Jin Yong-sung, was set to attend a trilateral meeting with his U.S. and Japanese counterparts in Washington on Wednesday (local time) to discuss security cooperation in the face of North Korean nuclear and missile threats.
This Trilateral Chiefs of Defense (Tri-Chod) meeting will involve Gen. Dan Caine of the U.S. and Gen. Hiroaki Uchikura of Japan. The military chiefs are expected to discuss ways to strengthen trilateral security cooperation, along with other regional security agendas and details of their trilateral multi-domain Freedom Edge exercise scheduled for later this year.
These Tri-Chod meetings are held regularly to assess the regional security environment and expand cooperation. The last such meeting took place in Seoul in July 2025. Gen. Jin, who took office in September, is also scheduled to hold bilateral talks with his U.S. and Japanese counterparts during his visit to Washington. He arrived in the U.S. on Tuesday and visited the Arlington National Cemetery and the Korean War Veterans Memorial to honor American troops and veterans.
