A Russian missile attack on the village of Pechenihy in Ukraine's Kharkiv region on Tuesday killed at least 10 people and injured eight, according to Kharkiv regional governor Oleg Synegubov. The strike, which occurred approximately 40 kilometers from the Russian border, damaged private homes and shops.
This attack comes amid a surge in civilian deaths in the ongoing conflict, with both sides intensifying long-distance strikes. Ukraine has been targeting energy sites deep inside Russia, while Russia has continued to strike Ukrainian energy infrastructure. Naftogaz Group reported its facilities had been targeted 13 times in the past week, and DTEK Group reported a fire at one of its mines that killed a 52-year-old man.
In a separate incident, Russian officials reported that air defence and electronic warfare forces were repelling a large-scale drone attack on the Moscow region overnight, with several people wounded and buildings hit. The most serious consequences were reported in the Pavlovsky Posad district, where a house burned down.
Ukraine has significantly increased its domestically produced firepower, launching over 800 long-range drones at Russia recently. The country is also developing its own ballistic missiles and working with European nations on anti-ballistic air defenses, seeking to counter Russia's advantage in ballistic missile defense systems. Meanwhile, a large military music festival planned for Moscow's Red Square was canceled due to fears of Ukrainian drone attacks.
