Russia launched a massive overnight air assault on Ukraine, deploying over 70 missiles and approximately 280 drones, which resulted in the deaths of eight people, including children. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the attacks destroyed or damaged dozens of civilian homes, businesses, and infrastructure facilities.
The most severe attack occurred near Zelensky's hometown of Kryvyi Rih, where a Russian ballistic missile hit a home in the village of Radushne, killing six people, including three children aged 11, 17, and a six-year-old girl. Two private homes were destroyed, and eight others were injured, including two children rescued from the rubble.
In Kyiv, one person died and fires broke out in three non-residential buildings. Poltava also reported a death following an attack on a Nova Poshta postal terminal. In Lviv, a Russian missile hit a residential apartment building, causing damage to its roof and upper floors, injuring about 30 people, including three children. Emergency workers were seen pulling people from the damaged building.
Ukraine's air force reported that air defence units shot down 55 missiles and 265 drones, but only one of nine ballistic missiles was intercepted. The Ukrainian military emphasized that the U.S.-made Patriot air defence system is crucial for downing high-speed ballistic missiles but is in short supply globally.
During the strikes, a Russian cruise missile crossed into Polish airspace, violating NATO territory. Polish authorities discovered a 10-meter crater and debris in a field in Lublin province. Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that indications point to a Russian Kh-101 ballistic missile, though investigations are ongoing. Polish armed forces mobilized fighter jets as a precaution.
