The Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, came under attack from Russian missiles early Thursday, according to local authorities. Explosions were heard in the city, and air strike alerts were issued for most of Ukraine's territory. Tymur Tkachenko, the head of Kyiv's military administration, stated that the enemy was attacking the capital with ballistic missiles and urged residents to stay in safe places.
This attack on Kyiv is the second this week. Earlier, a major Russian assault killed 10 people nationwide and damaged a 1,000-year-old monastery, a symbol of Ukraine's spiritual and cultural heritage. Russia denied striking the monastery.
President Zelenskiy reported speaking with U.S. President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron, among other leaders, on the sidelines of a Group of Seven meeting in France. He described the conversations as a "coordinating conversation" aimed at ending the war.
In other incidents, authorities in Sumy reported one person killed in a drone attack. In Enerhodar, the Russian-appointed mayor said Ukrainian strikes killed one person and injured four. In Russia's Belgorod border region, officials reported a Ukrainian drone strike killed one man. Moscow also accused Ukraine of attacking a bus carrying Belarusian schoolchildren, an accusation Kyiv denied. In the Rostov region, a Ukrainian drone attack killed one person, injured two, and caused a fire at commercial facilities. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin stated that falling drone debris caused minor damage to a shopping center on the outskirts of Moscow.
