Police in South Wales are investigating a fatal incident believed to be the result of a violent clash between rival motorcycle gangs. Anthony “Tony” Jones, 56, died from his injuries after a brawl involving at least a dozen men in Pontnewynydd, near Pontypool, last Thursday evening. The violence reportedly involved knives and hammers.
Investigators suspect members of two rival biker gangs, the Vikings and the Hells Angels, were involved. Ten men, aged between 31 and 73, were arrested in connection with the incident, with seven remaining in custody. Police have appealed for Anthony Paul Jones, 40, from Blaenavon, to come forward and are also searching for a blue Ford Transit van with the registration plate MA23 FLC.
Det Supt Laura Bartley stated that the investigation is in its early stages but progressing rapidly, with detectives working to establish the full circumstances. A police cordon remains in place outside the British Legion Club, where the fight occurred, for forensic examination. Nearby roads may remain closed into the weekend.
Both the Vikings and Hells Angels motorcycle clubs have chapters across the UK. While many motorcycle groups are hobbyist, some self-identified "outlaw" groups have been linked to criminal activities. Previous incidents include Hells Angels members being jailed for attacking Vikings members in October 2022, and other Hells Angels members being sentenced for firearms and drugs possession.
