Mongolia is strategically positioned to foster broader regional dialogue and contribute to peace on the Korean Peninsula, according to Gombojav Zandanshatar, the country's former prime minister. In a recent interview, Zandanshatar highlighted Mongolia's unique diplomatic standing, maintaining friendly relations with both North and South Korea, and its commitment to a multi-pillared foreign policy as a nuclear-weapon-free state.
Zandanshatar emphasized that Mongolia's role is not to act as a great-power mediator but as a 'connector' dedicated to preserving communication channels, building confidence, and supporting practical cooperation. He pointed to the Ulaanbaatar Dialogue, established in 2014 as a regional platform for security and peace cooperation in Northeast Asia, as embodying this philosophy. The former prime minister stated that the most valuable contribution is keeping conversations alive, especially during difficult political environments.
Earlier in June, South Korea's Unification Minister Chung Dong-young attended the annual forum in Mongolia, proposing a four-way dialogue involving the two Koreas, the United States, and China for denuclearization, with a potential expansion to include Mongolia due to its geographic location between Russia and China. Zandanshatar also stressed that enduring peace necessitates cooperation beyond security arrangements, including shared interests in energy, critical minerals, supply chains, climate, technology, and people-to-people exchanges. He believes that strategic partnerships are most resilient when supported by ordinary citizens, businesses, universities, and communities, not solely by governments.
Zandanshatar, a prominent political figure in Mongolia, has held numerous high-ranking positions, including prime minister, parliament speaker, and foreign minister. He remains active internationally, co-hosting the Trans-Altai Sustainability Dialogue. Currently visiting South Korea, he was scheduled to participate in the Jeju Forum for Peace and Prosperity, discussing "Reinventing Cooperation in a Fragmented World" alongside other global leaders.
