Lithuania has received intelligence indicating that Russia is planning attacks on infrastructure, prompting the country to increase security measures around its energy and transport facilities. President Gitanas Nauseda stated in an interview that while signals of these plans exist, the specific timing and locations are not yet identified. He noted that the attacks could involve various means aimed at physically damaging critical infrastructure and disrupting its functioning.
Nauseda did not specify if Lithuania itself was the target of these planned attacks. Lithuania, a member of NATO, shares borders with the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad and Belarus, an ally of Moscow. Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Lithuania has tripled its defense spending. Neighboring Poland also recently reported concerns from Western intelligence agencies regarding the risk of Russian attacks on its territory and the Baltic states.
Moscow has consistently denied allegations of planning or executing sabotage and other attacks in countries outside of Ukraine, characterizing such reports as part of an anti-Russian propaganda campaign.
