Franco-German defense group KNDS unveiled a new battle tank, the CAPINT, designed to replace the French Army's aging Leclerc fleet. This move comes as the joint Franco-German Main Ground Combat System (MGCS) project, intended to succeed both the Leclerc and Germany's Leopard 2 tanks, faces significant delays, reportedly running about 10 years behind its initial 2040-2045 entry-into-service target.
The CAPINT tank, named for "intermediary capability," combines a chassis from KNDS' German division and a gun from its French division. Its introduction aims to bolster French Army capabilities while paving the way for the future MGCS. The decision to launch an intermediate program was announced by French Armed Forces Minister Catherine Vautrin, who cited the delays in the MGCS project.
This development occurs amid heightened geopolitical tensions, particularly the growing threat from Russia, which is prompting European nations to enhance their military capacities. However, European defense collaboration is encountering challenges, exemplified by the recent dissolution of the joint FCAS fighter jet program due to disagreements between Airbus and Dassault Aviation.
Germany is also pursuing its own parallel intermediate tank development, with Rheinmetall working on a successor to the Leopard 2 fleet. KNDS is currently preparing for a dual-listing IPO in Frankfurt and Paris expected this year.
