Israel's Defense Minister Vows Retaliation Amid Escalating Lebanon Conflict

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz declared that "no account on any front will remain unsettled" amid escalating conflict, following a series of deadly strikes in southern Lebanon that killed 11 people and destroyed numerous homes. Katz also asserted on X that Israel would "forcefully defend our soldiers and citizens."

These developments occur as Israel has resumed strikes in Gaza, causing Palestinian casualties. Concurrently, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected a Gaza peace plan put forth by Trump.

Earlier in August, Katz faced significant criticism from the U.S. and the Lebanese government for comments that appeared to disregard a U.S.-brokered agreement for Israeli troop withdrawal from southern Lebanon. A senior U.S. State Department official emphasized that Washington "expects all parties to act in a manner consistent with the framework they agreed to," noting that a permanent Israeli military presence in southern Lebanon contradicts commitments made.

Katz had previously stated that Israel would not withdraw from security zones in Lebanon, Syria, or Gaza. Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam condemned Israel's actions, including the demolition of homes and infrastructure, as severe violations of international law. Katz had ordered the broad-scale demolition of villages adjacent to the Israeli border, which he claimed were used by Hezbollah as human shields and launchpads for attacks.
