Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Al Zaidi to visit Washington for economic and security talks

During the visit, several memorandums of understanding are expected to be signed, particularly in the oil and gas sector, with the goal of increasing Iraq's production capacity. The delegation will include key ministers such as those for Foreign Affairs, Oil, Finance, and Electricity, alongside the Governor of the Central Bank of Iraq and various investors. Representatives from the Kurdistan Region will also participate to discuss its future relations with Washington.

The agenda includes strengthening security and economic cooperation, attracting investment in energy and infrastructure, and addressing the issue of placing weapons under state control. The visit follows months of U.S. pressure that influenced Iraq's political leadership, with President Donald Trump having previously invited Al Zaidi to Washington. The timing is sensitive, as Baghdad has set a September deadline for disarming Iran-backed militias, a condition for deeper defense and economic cooperation with the U.S.
