Iran has issued a stern warning to Starlink, the satellite internet constellation operated by SpaceX, regarding the "unauthorised provision of services" within its territory. Tehran's delegation to the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space expressed serious concern, stating that commercial space platforms are increasingly being utilized for military and intelligence purposes, which undermines the peaceful nature of outer space and increases the risks of confrontation.
This development occurs amidst heightened regional tensions and reports suggesting proximity to a peace deal between the US and Iran. US President Donald Trump has actively disputed Iranian media reports and leaks concerning the framework of a potential agreement, characterizing them as untrue and dishonorable, and pushing back against the perception of making concessions. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced that a final, agreed-upon text for a peace deal has been reached, with Pakistan working to finalize next steps. US Congressman Ryan Zinke also noted that the two sides appear "closer to a deal than ever."
A senior US official indicated that Iran has agreed to a "performance-based deal" that includes dismantling its nuclear program, removing enriched materials, reopening the Strait of Hormuz, and ceasing funding armed groups. However, none of Iran's frozen assets will be released until these commitments are fulfilled. Iranian officials have described the current framework as dealing with confrontation in stages, with the nuclear file being non-negotiable at this stage and focusing on ending the war on all fronts. Discussions on reopening the Strait of Hormuz and lifting the naval blockade are expected to follow, with Oman and Iran mediating. Iran is also demanding the immediate release of its frozen assets, which remains a difficult issue given the deteriorating Iranian economy.
Separately, the Israeli military reported downing two aerial targets over southern Lebanon following alerts in northern Israel, with no reported damage or casualties. Israeli air strikes have also reportedly hit southern Lebanon.
