Funeral ceremonies for Iran's late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, who was reportedly assassinated on February 28, are scheduled to begin on July 4 in Tehran and conclude with his burial on July 9 in Mashhad. The schedule includes farewell ceremonies at Tehran's Imam Khomeini Mosalla on July 4 and 5, followed by a funeral procession in Tehran on July 6 and another in Qom on July 7. The final ceremony and burial will take place at the holy shrine of Imam Reza (AS) in Mashhad.
Ayatollah Khamenei led the Islamic Republic for nearly 37 years and was reportedly killed in a joint U.S. and Israeli military strike. Following his death, Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei, his 56-year-old son, was elected as the third Leader of the Islamic Revolution by the Assembly of Experts.
Organizers have invited the public and "free people of the world" to attend the ceremonies, emphasizing the people's principal role in organizing the mourning events. The mayor of Tehran had previously indicated a postponement of the funeral until late June or early July.
