Gunmen attacked and kidnapped students taking secondary school examinations at Lassa Day Secondary School in the Askira-Uba area of Borno state, northeastern Nigeria, on Monday morning. Police spokesman Nahum Daso stated that 10 victims were rescued hours after the attack, but could not confirm the total number of abducted students or casualties.
Amnesty International Nigeria reported that two teachers and one student were killed during the incident. The rights group emphasized that schools should be safe places and called on the Nigerian government to protect the educational sector from armed groups.
No group has immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. However, the region has been plagued by an insurgency that has killed thousands and displaced millions. Earlier this month, the Nigerian army rescued over 300 people abducted by Boko Haram from Ngoshe, a town approximately 114 kilometers from Lassa. In May, a joint operation with the United States reportedly killed 175 ISWAP fighters.
