Six individuals have been detained in France and are expected to face charges over a foiled attack that allegedly targeted a synagogue in Sarcelles, a suburb north of Paris. The French national anti-terrorism prosecutor's office (Pnat) announced that the plot is linked to Islamic extremism.
The investigation began after the domestic intelligence agency DGSI received information about a potential Islamist attack. This led to the discovery of a vehicle containing weapons, including a submachine gun, parked near a cinema and approximately 500 meters from a synagogue in Sarcelles. The Pnat stated that the six men are suspected of transporting this vehicle or supplying the weapons.
Eight men, aged between 22 and 40, were initially arrested in the Paris region on July 21. One additional man, already in detention for a separate case, was also questioned. Following their interrogations, three of the initial arrestees had their custody lifted without facing charges at this stage. The remaining six are being presented to an anti-terrorism judge for potential pre-trial detention.
Authorities are continuing their investigations to identify the individuals responsible for orchestrating the delivery of the vehicle and planning the violent act.
