Canada announced a new package of sanctions against Russia, targeting 162 individuals, entities, and vessels. The sanctions are aimed at Russia's shadow fleet, its energy revenues, and its defense, industrial, and disinformation sectors.
The announcement followed a meeting between Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the G7 Summit held in Evian, France. During their discussion, Carney reaffirmed Canada's support for Ukraine's reconstruction, highlighting opportunities in energy, infrastructure, and clean technology. The leaders also discussed strengthening defense-industrial partnerships, including in advanced technologies like drone production.
According to a government press release, Canada has already imposed sanctions on over 3,400 individuals and entities, as well as over 600 vessels, tied to Russia's shadow fleet in 2026 alone.
Prime Minister Carney also condemned Russia's attack on June 15, which struck the historic Kyiv Pechersk Lavra monastery. On the sidelines of the G7 Summit, President Zelensky also held meetings with U.S. President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron.
