Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus, director-general of the World Health Organization, has reassured the public, stating that Americans should not be concerned about the risk of Ebola. This statement comes amidst efforts by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) to bolster Ebola preparedness across the Americas. PAHO has activated its incident management system and is working with national health ministries to improve surveillance, diagnostic capabilities, and infection control. The organization is also preparing to distribute essential detection materials for the Bundibugyo ebolavirus strain, which has led the WHO to declare a public health emergency of international concern. The Democratic Republic of Congo has reported 344 confirmed cases and 60 deaths, with an additional 116 suspected cases under investigation. Uganda has recorded 15 confirmed cases and one death. Dr. Ciro Ugarte, PAHO's director of health emergencies, stressed the importance of readiness for rapid response to potential importations, while advising against travel or trade restrictions.
