Livingston Parish deputies in Louisiana arrested a registered sex offender who was using voice-changing technology to pose as a teen girl while communicating with a child on the online gaming platform Roblox. Sheriff Jason Ard noted the suspect's disguise and the prevalence of such technology. Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill stated that the state is suing Roblox, alleging the platform is an environment where predators can target vulnerable children. Murrill emphasized that online child exploitation is not a victimless crime and highlighted cases where children are lured away. Louisiana is expecting 90,000 tips regarding online child exploitation this year, with 30,000 processed by the end of May. Ard compared internet-enabled devices to the 'white van' of the past, representing a new frontier for predators. Roblox disputes the characterization of its platform as unsafe, stating it has implemented over 100 safety features, prohibits image and video sharing, and uses AI and human moderators. The company also noted that video and image sharing have always been prohibited on Roblox and that its technology makes it impossible for users to share such content in chat. Roblox also stated that it cooperates with law enforcement and the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. Earlier this year, Roblox became the first online gaming platform to require age checks for all users to access chat features, limiting younger users to chatting only with peers by default, with chat disabled by default for users under nine.
