Representative Grace Meng has submitted a House resolution to honor the legacy of the late U.S. politician Charles Rangel, recognizing his significant contributions to the South Korea-U.S. alliance. Rangel, a decorated Korean War veteran and a staunch supporter of South Korea, served as a Democratic representative for New York from 1971 to 2017.
The resolution, introduced on Thursday, commemorates Rangel's life, military service, and legislative impact. Throughout his extensive career, Rangel was instrumental in various Korea-related issues, advocating for peace and reunification on the Korean Peninsula, and supporting the reunions of divided Korean American families and Korean War veterans. He was also a founding member of the Congressional Korea Caucus, a group dedicated to supporting Korea.
During his tenure, Rangel held influential positions, including chairing the powerful House Ways and Means Committee from 2007 to 2010, becoming the first African American to hold that role. Several other representatives, including Thomas Suozzi, Gregory Meeks, Dave Min, Marilyn Strickland, and Frederica Wilson, are listed as cosponsors of the resolution.
