The Haryana government has initiated a push for companies to adopt work-from-home (WFH) policies and staggered office schedules, primarily targeting Gurgaon, a major corporate hub. This move is part of a broader strategy to combat traffic congestion, reduce fuel consumption, and conserve energy amidst rising fuel prices and global supply chain disruptions.
The state government is collaborating with industry bodies such as Nasscom, CII, and FICCI to implement these measures. The advisory, issued by Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi, highlights the impact of ongoing global supply chain challenges linked to the conflict in West Asia on fuel prices and imports.
Industry leaders, like Nitin Sahini of Foqal Analytics, have welcomed the proposal, noting the proven productivity of hybrid and remote models and the environmental benefits. Employees also support the initiative, citing cost savings and continued operational effectiveness observed during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Alongside the advisory to private firms, the Haryana government is enforcing austerity measures within its own departments. These include a 20% reduction in petroleum-related expenditure until September, a mandatory 10% monthly decrease in vehicle usage, and a 50% cut in VIP convoy vehicles, subject to security needs. A temporary ban on purchasing non-electric vehicles for government entities has also been imposed.
Citizens are encouraged to adopt fuel-saving habits, utilize public transport, carpool, and opt for electric vehicles. They are also advised to conserve energy at home and work, support local tourism and products, and maintain air-conditioning temperatures within limits. The government is promoting the 'Mera Bharat, Mera Yogdan' campaign for sustainable living and resource conservation.
