Rex Heuermann, the architect convicted in the Gilgo Beach serial killings, has spent the past three years in a segregated jail cell, reading crime novels and briefly corresponding with Keith Hunter Jesperson, the "Happy Face Killer." According to Suffolk County Sheriff Errol Toulon, Jesperson initiated contact, writing first to Heuermann, who responded but has since ceased communication.
Heuermann's reading material consists of violent crime and mystery novels, a choice that concerns Sheriff Toulon. Among the books he has borrowed are titles by J.D. Robb, John Sandford, Heather Graham, Sue Grafton, and Lisa Jackson.
Sheriff Toulon described Heuermann as stoic and without remorse, noting his demeanor has remained unchanged throughout his incarceration. Heuermann is housed in a standard 6-by-9-foot cell, with limited interaction and solitary time in the jail yard. He receives visitors, including his ex-wife and daughter, in a designated area.
