European allies have increased their contributions to NATO's crisis response forces, according to NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. This comes after the U.S. informed allies last month that it would reduce its pool of military capabilities committed to the alliance in a crisis.
Rutte stated that he heard "a lot of encouraging comments" from allies regarding support for Ukraine during a recent ministerial meeting. He also expressed dissatisfaction that only a few European countries were leading the effort to purchase U.S. weapons for Ukraine under the Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) program. Rutte emphasized that while the comments were positive, he would monitor whether allies deliver on their promises.
Discussions around support for Ukraine were a key topic at a NATO meeting in Sweden. Norway was expected to call for increased contributions to Ukraine's defense capabilities. A meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Council at the foreign minister level was also anticipated, with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha discussing threats posed by Russia and Belarus with Rutte.
