AM Green and VO Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOCPA) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to establish a green ammonia production and marine bunkering hub at VOC Port in Tuticorin, India.
The agreement, signed on May 28, outlines AM Green's plan to develop up to 200,000 metric tonnes per annum (KTPA) of green ammonia marine bunkering capacity by 2029-30, with an initial investment of approximately ₹2,000 crore.
Both entities will explore pilot bunkering operations and jointly develop the necessary infrastructure, adhering to international best practices. The partnership leverages AM Green's large-scale green ammonia production capabilities and VOCPA's experience in handling liquid ammonia and its designation as a National Green Hydrogen Hub.
Looking ahead, the partners aim to scale the capacity to 500 KTPA by 2035, contingent on market demand and the adoption of low-carbon marine fuels, which would require a total investment of around ₹5,000 crore.
Furthermore, AM Green is committed to developing a 1 million tonne per annum (MTPA) green ammonia production facility in proximity to the port, an investment valued at ₹15,000 crore, with VOCPA providing active support. AM Green has already completed a significant portion of land acquisition for this complex, which will also facilitate an investment of ₹35,000 crore in renewable power generation. This development aligns with AM Green's broader target of developing over 4 MTPA of green ammonia production capacity across India by 2030.
Gautam Reddy Kumbam, CEO of AM Green, highlighted VOC Port's existing ammonia infrastructure, its Green Hydrogen Hub designation, and its strategic location on global shipping lanes as critical components for the company's pan-India commercialisation strategy. Susanta Kumar Nath, Chairperson of VOCPA, emphasized the port's historical role in India's ammonia supply chain and its commitment to becoming a world-class green fuels hub.
