Airbus is reportedly delaying the planned launch of a larger variant of its A220 jet due to a muted response from leasing companies and ongoing discussions about the aircraft's range and performance. While a launch at the Farnborough Airshow in late July is now considered improbable, Airbus has not ruled out a launch later this year. The proposed larger version, potentially carrying around 180 passengers compared to the current 160, aims to renegotiate supplier contracts and lower production costs for the program, which Airbus acquired in 2018. However, concerns about reduced range with a 'simple stretch' upgrade and durability issues with Pratt & Whitney engines are impacting potential customer interest. Some lessors also worry about the impact on the value of the A320neo family, which sits above the A220 in size. The A220 program remains in the red and has been losing orders to Brazilian rival Embraer.
