The UK Home Office is set to implement new "capped safe and legal" routes for asylum seekers later this year, a move designed to allow organizations like universities, community groups, and businesses to sponsor refugees. This initiative draws inspiration from Canada's asylum system.
Alongside the new sponsorship routes, the government intends to modify the application of human rights and modern slavery laws to asylum claims, which it asserts will help identify and dismiss "vexatious" applications. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood emphasized that the reformed system will safeguard "genuine refugees" while preventing abuse of the system.
This policy shift comes as the immigration bill is prepared for parliamentary debate, with potential opposition from some Labour MPs. While the UK currently has a limited community sponsorship program (UKRS), the majority of refugees are supported by local councils. The government faces pressure to reduce taxpayer costs associated with housing asylum seekers and to restore public confidence in the asylum system, which has been impacted by illegal small boat arrivals.
