Two major labor unions in South Korea, the Federation of Korean Trade Unions and the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions, have jointly proposed a minimum wage of 12,000 won per hour for the upcoming year. This represents a significant 16.3% increase from the current rate of 10,320 won. The unions argue that the average wage increases over the past three years have not kept pace with the rate of inflation during the same period. The Minimum Wage Commission, composed of labor, business, and public interest representatives, is currently in discussions to determine the minimum wage for next year. The commission has been holding regular meetings since April, with its sixth plenary session scheduled for Tuesday. Market observers anticipate that business representatives will likely advocate for a wage freeze or a more modest increase.
