Data centers, in particular, have become a significant consumer of electricity in Ireland, accounting for 23% of the total metered electricity in 2025, a substantial increase from 5% in 2015. This usage nearly matched the combined electricity consumption of all urban and rural households. At the European Union level, similar efforts are underway to modernize the bloc's power grid to better utilize renewable energy and achieve broader electrification goals, with the European Commission setting a target of 46% electrification by 2040.
