A severe heatwave across Europe has led France to ban alcohol consumption at music festivals and other public events in 35 departments under a red heatwave alert on June 21. Temperatures were forecast to reach up to 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) in these regions, including Paris.
The decision was made by Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu following a crisis meeting, with the aim of mitigating health risks and preventing strain on emergency services. Prefects in the affected departments are expected to issue decrees to enforce the ban, and alcohol will not be served at state-organized events.
Meanwhile, Germany issued nationwide heat warnings as temperatures approached 38C, and Spain closed a fan zone in Madrid due to the extreme heat. Scientists note that climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of such heatwaves in Europe, posing risks to public health and economic activity. Bank of France Governor Emmanuel Moulin noted that while short-term economic effects are ambiguous, heatwaves weigh on economic activity in the medium term.
