The European Central Bank (ECB) has unveiled ten finalist design proposals for a new series of euro banknotes, which are set to enter circulation from the end of 2026. The designs draw inspiration from two main themes: European culture, featuring influential historical figures, and the continent's natural biodiversity, represented by emblematic birds and river landscapes.
ECB President Christine Lagarde presented the proposals and invited European citizens to participate in an online survey to help shape the final decision. The survey, which opened on July 23, 2026, will close on September 21. Over 1,200 proposals were initially reviewed by an independent jury before selecting the ten finalists, which include distinct graphic styles ranging from minimalist to more traditional depictions.
The "European culture" theme could see figures such as Maria Callas, Ludwig van Beethoven, Marie Curie, Miguel de Cervantes, Leonardo da Vinci, and Bertha von Suttner featured on banknotes. The alternative nature theme proposes depictions of European birds set in river landscapes, with the reverse side of these notes featuring symbols of the European Union's main institutions.
Following the public consultation, the ECB's Governing Council will make the final choice, and the new banknotes are scheduled for issuance starting at the end of 2026. The initiative aims to refresh the image of the single currency while reinforcing its connection to Europe's shared cultural heritage and natural environment.
