Hong Kong's stock exchange has reclaimed its position as the world's leading venue for initial public offerings (IPOs) in the first half of 2025, surpassing Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange. The exchange saw fundraising surge by 695% year-on-year to US$14.1 billion, driven by significant listings and renewed investor confidence.
A total of 42 companies raised funds on the main board, with notable offerings including Contemporary Amperex Technology Ltd. (CATL) which raised US$5.3 billion, making it the largest IPO globally since 2023. Other major listings included Hengrui Medicine, Haitian Flavouring, and Sanhua Intelligent Control, each raising over US$1 billion.
The resurgence in Hong Kong's IPO market is further evidenced by an 82% increase in average daily trading volume to HK$240 billion and a more than 20% gain in the Hang Seng Index. This activity has been supported by increased participation from international investors and substantial Southbound inflows, enhancing the market's appeal. The robust post-listing performance, with average IPO investors enjoying returns exceeding 30%, has also been a key factor sustaining this high level of activity.
Landmark listings and strong market performance across diverse sectors such as healthcare, technology, media, and telecommunications (TMT), consumer goods, and energy have contributed to Hong Kong's premier status. Regulatory enhancements, including a "Tech Company Hotline," have also streamlined the listing process for specialized technology firms, attracting global institutional investors and sovereign wealth entities.
