Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has unveiled a new technical roadmap for the network, dubbed "Lean Ethereum," which outlines key priorities for the remainder of the decade. The plan, shared on X, emphasizes quantum resistance, enhanced scalability, and improved privacy as critical goals.
Buterin stated that these upgrades are expected to roll out over the next three to four years, from 2026 through 2029. He drew a parallel between the scale of this transformation and the significance of the September 2022 Merge, which transitioned Ethereum from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake. Quantum safety, in particular, has been elevated in priority, with Buterin describing the need for a quantum-safe solution for blobs as "urgent." Privacy is also being elevated to a "first class goal."
This strategic shift follows recent organizational changes within the Ethereum Foundation, including approximately 20% staff layoffs and a 40% budget reduction aimed at streamlining operations. The foundation has also seen several departures of key personnel, including executives Hsiao-Wei Wang and Tomasz Stańczak, and protocol contributors Tim Beiko and Barnabé Monnot.
Furthermore, Buterin is advocating for the development of a new virtual machine, such as leanISA or RISC-V, to better support programmable privacy and scalability. However, questions have been raised regarding the feasibility of Buterin's timeline. Researcher Dankrad Feist suggested that AI could potentially accelerate the delivery of these upgrades within a year, while crypto analyst Ignas Fiodorovas expressed skepticism about the Ethereum Foundation's historical ability to meet deadlines. Fiodorovas also noted the absence of improved tokenomics for Ether in the current roadmap.
