T. Rowe Price, a $1.9 trillion asset manager, has included established memecoins in its actively managed crypto ETF, TKNZ, as part of a disciplined investment strategy. Blue Macellari, head of digital assets and lead portfolio manager for the fund, explained that the decision is not about chasing internet hype but about creating a comprehensive representation of the crypto market.
Macellari stated that active management requires judging each eligible token on its investment merits. She believes that excluding a performing memecoin on principle would disadvantage investors. The TKNZ fund, launched in July, allows managers discretion to adjust holdings based on research, market conditions, and risk management, unlike passive index-tracking ETFs. It currently has a temporary fee waiver through May 2027.
While many investors associate memecoins with speculation, Macellari highlighted their role within blockchain ecosystems. She noted that established memecoins are among the largest crypto assets by market capitalization. Currently, the ETF holds Dogecoin, which constitutes 1.26% of the fund, with Bitcoin and Ethereum making up approximately 60% and Binance Coin being the third-largest allocation.
Furthermore, Macellari views memecoin trading as a crucial real-world stress test for blockchain networks, assessing their ability to support high activity with near-instant settlement, low transaction costs, and reliability during congestion. This capability is essential as stablecoins become more integrated into mainstream finance for both large transfers and everyday payments.
Macellari anticipates that the crypto ETF market will become more specialized, with funds focusing on specific sectors or asset classes like large-cap cryptocurrencies or emerging digital assets. T. Rowe Price aims to differentiate itself through active portfolio management, focusing on areas where it believes active management can add significant value for clients.
