This move comes as the broader Web3 gaming sector struggles with sustainable business models, with another project, Fishing Frenzy, also announcing its closure.
The wind-down of Pudgy Party and the closure of Fishing Frenzy highlight the ongoing struggles for Web3 gaming projects to establish viable and sustainable business models, despite a recent uptick in overall NFT market capitalization.
Pudgy Penguins, a non-fungible token (NFT) project, has announced it will cease development of its mobile game, Pudgy Party. The team stated that it will redirect its gaming resources towards Pudgy World, a browser-based experience that is considered the flagship gaming product for the Pudgy Penguins ecosystem.
Pudgy Party, which launched in August 2025, had surpassed 1 million downloads across platforms. The consolidation of gaming efforts into Pudgy World aims to enhance scalability and introduce new users to the Pudgy Penguins brand as the project expands into toys, licensing, and entertainment.
This development occurs amidst broader challenges in the Web3 gaming sector, where finding sustainable business models remains difficult. Another Web3 gaming project, Fishing Frenzy, and its developer, Uncharted, also announced they are shutting down operations. The Fishing Frenzy team cited an inability to achieve product-market-business fit for their crypto-gaming model. Fishing Frenzy is scheduled to shut down its servers on June 25 at 2:00 am UTC, and has stopped selling in-game packages and made its native token untradable.
