A coalition of 27 crypto and Web3 companies, including OKX, MetaMask, and Matter Labs, has established the "Internet Court" to facilitate dispute resolution between artificial intelligence agents. This initiative addresses the growing need for mechanisms to settle contractual disagreements that arise in agent-to-agent transactions, which occur without direct human intervention.
AI agents are increasingly negotiating and executing transactions autonomously. However, as with human interactions, these machine-speed dealings can lead to disputes. Traditional legal systems are not equipped to handle the speed and complexity of these agentic disagreements, prompting the development of this new protocol led by the GenLayer Foundation. The Internet Court aims to make AI-based payments, escrow, and dispute resolution interoperable across various systems.
David Riudor, CEO and co-founder of the GenLayer Foundation, highlighted the urgency, stating, "Machine-speed money needs machine-speed adjudication." The protocol tackles the fragmentation in the current AI commerce infrastructure, which includes emerging standards like Coinbase's x402 for payments and Google's A2A for interoperability. Albert Castellana, co-founder and CEO of GenLayer Labs, explained that the Internet Court aims to unify these disparate systems into a single, accessible skill for agents to ensure financial commitments are upheld even when contested.
GenLayer is integrating the MetaMask Smart Accounts Kit, featuring ERC-7710 delegations and its x402 Facilitator, into the Internet Court. Ryan McPeck, Smart Accounts Lead at MetaMask, confirmed this integration.
