MetaMask has launched Agent Wallet, a self-custodial cryptocurrency wallet designed to enable AI agents to execute on-chain transactions autonomously, according to the company.
The wallet is intended for traders and developers who utilize AI agents to monitor markets, identify trading opportunities, and execute transactions. Users can establish spending caps, approve specific decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols, and configure risk settings before AI agents initiate transactions. The wallet offers two modes: "Guard Mode" and "Beast Mode," providing different levels of automation.
Agent Wallet supports various AI models including Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, OpenClaw, Hermes, and OpenCode, and is compatible with Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM)-compatible networks and Hyperliquid. A key feature is gas abstraction, which allows users to pay network fees using the asset being transferred, eliminating the need to hold a network's native token for gas fees.
This launch follows MetaMask's earlier rollout of Agent Wallet to approximately 200 early access users in June. The move comes amid a competitive landscape where crypto companies are developing infrastructure for AI agents capable of managing portfolios and interacting with decentralized applications. Coinbase introduced its Agentic Wallets in February, and MoonPay expanded its AI agent strategy in March.
MetaMask emphasizes that Agent Wallet enhances security by enforcing wallet-level permissions rather than relying on AI agents to act safely. Supported transactions undergo transaction simulation, threat scanning, and MEV protection. Additionally, MetaMask offers Transaction Protection coverage of up to $10,000 per month for eligible transactions that pass security checks but still result in losses. The company stated that the security-first model ensures agents operate within user-defined boundaries.
