Coinbase has begun a phased rollout of 24/5 trading for nearly 4,000 U.S. stocks to eligible users in the United Kingdom. This expansion allows customers to buy and sell American equities alongside cryptocurrencies within the same application, aligning with Coinbase's vision of an integrated investment platform.
The new service offers zero-commission trades and the ability to purchase fractional shares starting from as little as £1. Users can fund their stock trading positions using either British Pounds (GBP) or USD Coin (USDC). Coinbase One members will also benefit from uncapped rewards on their USDC balances.
Coinbase UK CEO Keith Grose noted that the offering includes major AI companies among the 4,000 U.S. equities. The move follows Coinbase securing a MiFID investment services license from the Financial Conduct Authority, which permits the exchange to offer derivatives and equities trading in addition to crypto assets.
In response to the news, Coinbase's stock (COIN) experienced modest gains in premarket trading. The expansion represents a strategic diversification for Coinbase, aiming to reduce reliance on crypto trading volumes and establish itself as a multi-asset platform. This development occurs amidst broader discussions on crypto regulation, with Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong engaging with lawmakers on proposed legislation.
